Create impact with seasonal florals
Welcome back to another Confession of a Print Designer where I’m diving into 3 ways to create impact with seasonal florals.
Firstly, have you ever thought of your role as a designer like this?
As designers, we wield the incredible power to shape the world’s aesthetics, influence emotions, and connect deeply with our audience through our creations. Well, have you ever taken that stance on it?
If not, you are only scratching the surface of print design and what you can do with your creative genius.
One of the most powerful ways to tap into this potential is by designing pattern designs that resonate with different seasons. This approach is not only about staying relevant but also about crafting experiences that evoke the right feelings and emotions in our customers.
Sometimes you need to step back and think of your designs from a consumer point of view to connect your artwork and idea to the correct design.
Here are 3 ways you can do this.
The Emotional Impact of Seasonal Colour
Colour is a profound communicator which can help create impact with seasonal florals. It not only helps identify trends, but the psychology behind colours is also extensive. It has the power to evoke specific emotions, set moods, and even influence behaviours. Are you giving it this much weight in your designs?
In the context of seasonal design, the choice of colour is paramount.
This also allows you to create hyperfocussed designs that will appeal to a certain market at a certain time. Whilst also giving your work a fresh sense of variety.
Seasonal Florals = Purpose-Driven Design
If there is one thing I’m passionate about, it is creating patterns with purpose and intention, seasonal florals are one way we can do this. One common pitfall for many designers is the temptation to design solely based on personal preference. It is important to add your creative flare but ask yourself… “Does anyone want this??”
With seasonal design, we can pinpoint the product’s purpose. We can design different designs that might be a complete No for one industry but a HELL YES for another. This is what we want to achieve. Never aim for the grey area… shoot for the black and white.
By focusing on the product’s purpose, we ensure that our designs are not just visually appealing but also meaningful and practical for our customers. For example, we might 100% be hitting the mark for a bikini brand with one design, and creating a completely different style pattern for a different market, like, heritage wallpaper.
Creating a Narrative with Seasonal Florals
Every successful design collection tells a story. Within that collection, every design should also have it’s own storyline. This narrative approach is particularly effective when working with seasonal patterns. By tapping into the natural ebb and flow of the seasons, designers can create collections that tell a compelling story, evoking a sense of time and place.
Seasonal Floral patterns are a perfect example of this. Florals dominate the pattern industry every season, but the interpretation and presentation of these patterns can vary dramatically. This is how florals, particularly those for different seasons can carry you through every season successfully as a designer. You have something to offer your clients whenever and for whatever they need. And why I’m always raving about needing florals in your toolbelt.
This approach keeps the designs relevant and adds an evergreen quality to your portfolio, making your work timeless and adaptable.
If you think this is a little deep, I want you to remember that there are a lot of other designers creating pretty patterns, I want you to have the ability to create pattern designs that connect with customers so that yours sells.
I am running a 5-day Free Challenge called Floral Seasons in Surface Pattern 15th-19th July. In the meantime, you can download my FREE Ultimate Guide to Floral Design to get you prepped.
In conclusion, the power of designing pattern designs for different seasons lies in the ability to evoke emotions, connect with the audience, and tell a compelling story. By considering the emotional impact of colour, focusing on purpose-driven design, and creating a narrative with seasonal patterns like florals, designers can create collections that resonate deeply with customers. This approach not only ensures relevance and engagement but also adds an evergreen quality to your work, making it a valuable addition to any designer’s portfolio.
So, as you embark on your next design journey, remember to think seasonally, purposefully, and narratively—your audience will thank you for it, and so will your sales sheet. And if you need a little more help on the subject, you know where I am.
